MYOMECTOMY

What is myomectomy?

Myomectomy is a surgical procedure especially designed to remove uterine fibroids. Uterine fibroids are growths that occur in the uterus. Suring a myomectomy, your surgeon will remove any fibroids that are causing uncomfortable symptoms and then rebuild the uterus.

Do I need myomectomy?

Your gynaecologist may recommend the procedure of you have fibroids that are causing discomfort and pain, and if they are interfering with your day-to-day life. Your gynaecologist may recommend myomectomy rather than a hysterectomy if you would like to plan a pregnancy, if you would prefer to keep your uterus in tact, and if there is a chance that your fibroids are negatively impacting your fertility.

How does it work?

When it comes to performing the procedure, there are a number of options available. These include:

Abdominal myomectomy

An incision is made in the abdomen so that your surgeon has access to the uterus and can remove the fibroids.

Laparoscopic myomectomy

Your surgeon is able to remove the fibroids through several very small incisions in the abdomen.

Hysteroscopic myomectomy

In this type of myomectomy, your surgeon removes fibroids by inserting surgical instruments through the vagina and cervix into the uterus.
